The all-inclusive resorts we recommend are all near the city of Cabo San Lucas, renowned for its nightlife and restaurants. However, if you’re looking for day trip ideas for an authentic Baja experience, check out our five tips below:
San Jose del Cabo, about 40 minutes away by car (traveling southeast along Mexico 1), has a charming “Old World” feel to it with an attractive main square and tree-lined streets. It’s a great destination for couples wishing to pop in and out of cafes, art galleries, restaurants, and shops selling Mexican handicrafts. There are also several mission-style churches in the area that are worth checking out for their unique architecture.
Continuing along Mexico 1, traveling north into the peninsula’s interior, you’ll reach the city of Santiago in about an hour. This part of Los Cabos is ideal for couples seeking solace in nature. Keep your eyes peeled for the towns of Agua Caliente, Santa Rita, and El Chorro – all home to hot springs in the area. Or, circle back on your way back and hit up these hot springs after hiking a bit north of Santiago in an area called Fox Canyon (home to a 40-foot waterfall).
Fans of art should head west on Mexico 1 to Todos Santos. Still a bit of an unknown destination in the area, this is an artists’ colony and is chock full of galleries. Don’t miss
Galeria de Todos Santos – home to the finest landscapes from famous Mexican artists.
You’ve heard the Eagles’ classic hit “Hotel California” – now check out the original
Hotel California that inspired it, also in Todos Santos. With just 11 rooms, this icon is almost always sold out. However, anybody can go in and enjoy their unique collection of art and furniture from all over the world, as well as enjoy a glass of wine at the bar.
Whale watching is also big in Los Cabos. Gray, blue, and humpback whales migrate to the waters off Baja California every year between January and March. Chances are excellent that you’ll see them playing and breeching right from the beachy areas of your resort (with a pair of good binoculars). If that’s too far away and you want to get more up close and personal, book one of the special whale watching tours. Talk to a Team Traterra representative to arrange a tour especially for you.
When to Go
There really is not a bad time of year to visit Cabo San Lucas. Summers range from 65-95 degrees; winter from 60-75 degrees. High season is during spring break (March), Easter (March or April) and the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Thunderstorms are few and far between, but as this destination is south of the Tropic of Cancer, the sun’s rays are indeed intense and strong sunscreen is necessary.
Getting Around
If you plan on doing a fair amount of sightseeing while in Los Cabos, rent a car. Talk to a Team Traterra representative for your best options. For couples planning on staying at the all-inclusive resorts and not venturing out, it’s best to know in advance (we can assist) if your resort provides complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport.
Restaurant Recommendations:
Blvd. Marina lote 10 local 2 (next to Costa Real Hotel), Cabo San Lucas
Sushi may not be top of mind when dining in Los Cabos, but it ought to be. This region is a fishing mecca and the seafood doesn’t get any fresher than this. Order the sea bass sashimi marinated in cilantro and chili.
Misiones del Cabo, Km. 6 Cabo San Lucas
Situated at the top of the cliff with tables overlooking the bay, this Italian restaurant has a wonderful view of the Arches, particularly at sunset. It’s worth coming here for the view alone, but the food is absolutely fantastic as well. Order the five-course tasting menu and sit back to see what the chef found at the market that day. Mona Lisa is a great place to linger while feasting on the expertly prepared dishes as the sun dips behind the arches.
Playa El Medano, Cabo San Lucas
This casual beachfront restaurant serves barbecue, fusion, Mexican, and seafood. We like it because if you are out fishing and get lucky, you can take your catch here. The chef will take your fish and grill it with butter and garlic and serve it back to you with handmade tortillas and pico de gallo. They go great with a cold Pacifico or two.
Damiana is a light herbal-based liqueur made from an herb grown in Baja California. It’s considered to be a natural aphrodisiac and tastes fantastic in margaritas. Available in many of the local shops, take a bottle home as a keepsake, or a kick start.
