Hollywood & Vines

California wines rank among the very best in the world. The famous wineries of the Napa and Sonoma valleys in Northern California are on the bucket list of oenophiles from across the globe. What few people realize is that the wines of the Santa Ynez and Santa Barbara valleys in Southern California, are equal in quality; and, in some cases, heads and shoulders above. The region has been producing world-class wines long before Miles and Jack introduced the world to its Pinot Noirs in the movie Sideways.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1 - Arrive in California Sunday, September 9th, 2012
details

Today you kick off your adventure in the Santa Ynez Valley. You can check into the Fess Parker Wine Country Inn & Spa in Los Olivos as soon as 3 PM. Team Traterra recommends flying into Los Angeles or Santa Barbara. If you are flying, transportation from the airport to your accommodations is up to you—and we highly recommend booking a rental car so you can enjoy exploring the bounty that is Santa Ynez Valley. Home to quaint shops and dozens upon dozens of wineries, the area is also a haven for golfers and equestrians.

A Traterra representative will greet you in the lobby upon your arrival. The group will dine together at 7 PM at Los Olivos Café, which will consist of a delicious multiple course meal with exquisite wine pairings.

DAY 2 - Hobnob with Hollywood Insiders Monday, September 10th, 2012
details

This morning, you have free time to do as you wish. At 11:30 AM, you’ll be whisked from your accommodations to the home of Richard and Pamela Harris at Calzada Ridge Vineyard, where they settled into successful second careers as vintners after leaving the film industry in 1996.

Richard’s Hollywood achievements are numerous, including an Academy award for film editing Titanic. Pamela worked as an associate producer on Titanic and was nominated for a visual effects Oscar herself for Cliffhanger. The two will talk about their life in film and how they got into wine, as a catered lunch is prepared and served outside.

During the three hours you have with Richard and Pamela, the couple will also talk about the high standards necessary to create a wine they not only love to drink themselves, but also share with others. The couple limits production of their Calzada Ridge Viognier to 100 cases a year, so if you like what you sample, make certain to arrange to have bottles shipped home. Learn how the Harris vineyard is cared for—from pruning to leafing to harvest—all using only organic substances on the vines.

DAY 3 - Feast on California Cuisine Tuesday, September 11th, 2012
details
Today you’ll learn about the Italian and Greek influences on the local flavor of the Santa Ynez Valley. Most of the day is yours to explore Santa Ynez on your own (for suggestions, see our tips) until the group convenes at 5 PM for a private olive oil tasting at Global Gardens. Theo Stephan, the founder of Global Gardens, is a native Californian whose ancestors came to the U.S. from Greece. In addition to explaining about the different kinds of oils, she will talk about her award-winning extra virgin olive oil and her involvement in growing Santa Barbara’s very first olive groves—all of which are pesticide-free and certified organic.
At 6:30 PM, it’s time to head to dinner at Trattoria Grappolo for an exquisite Italian dinner. Owner and Chef Leonardo Curti will be introduced, as he’ll be giving a cooking lesson to the group the next day in his home. The dinner will highlight some of the restaurant’s most popular appetizers, main dishes, food-appropriate wine pairings, and delectable desserts—all using local, organic, and seasonal ingredients.

Today consists of two parts—a hands-on cooking lesson in the morning (complete with lunch) and sunset storytelling in the evening. At 10:30 AM, you’ll be taken to the home of Leonardo Curti and his wife, Jennifer. Leonardo, who was born in Italy, says his passion for food began as a boy growing up in Calabria, where he enjoyed helping pick up eggs, clean fish, going to the butcher for meat, and selecting cheeses and produce at the local market. A California resident since 1992, Leonardo worked for several Italian restaurants before opening his own in Santa Ynez in 1997. Leonardo’s cooking lesson promises to be “accessible Italian cuisine” – featuring hearty country dishes from his cookbook, Trattoria Grappolo: Simple Recipes for Traditional Italian Cuisine.

The afternoon—from 1:30 PM to 6 PM—is yours to do as you please. The final evening with the group is at your curator’s home. Diane, a vintner herself, will talk about how she got involved with wine and sample from her signature 16 Crows and Highland Oaks label wines. A catered dinner by Pam Pilcher will be served outdoors.

After dinner, enjoy sunset storytelling with Gerald di Pego. The Hollywood screenwriter and producer is best known for his work on Message in a Bottle, Phenomenon, and The Forgotten. Gerald will tell stories of his life in Hollywood and discuss his current screenplays. The evening concludes at 10 PM.

DAY 5 - Bid California Adieu Thursday, September 13th, 2012
details
You’ll check out of your accommodations, say good-bye, with indelible memories, having sampled our version of “Hollywood and Vine,” and return home. Please note that any wines you tasted during your time with us are available for purchase on site—or by arranging shipment to your home address (some restrictions may apply).

In Your Free Time

This exclusive experience has you rubbing shoulders with Hollywood insiders and sipping on exquisite wines—all while meeting others who share your interests. Yet don’t let the “group experience” lead you to believe you won’t have enough time to do your own thing or discover Santa Ynez Valley your way. Need some ideas? Your curator, Diane Petras, recommends the following:

Golf

Tee off at the nearby—and public—golf course Alisal Guest Ranch, 15 minutes from Los Olivos. We can help arrange advance tee times.

Hiking

Lace up your boots and hit the trails leading up to Figueroa Mountain or Telegraph Hill. Ask your concierge for details.

Shopping

Solvang is a Danish-themed town just down the road and a great place to window shop. And you simply can’t go to Solvang without stopping in at some of the bakeries. Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery (1529 Mission Dr.) has great pastries and a phenomenal selection of fresh-baked breads that they’ll ship to wherever you live.

Wineries

Check out Melville (known for its Pinot Noir), Roblar (home to a stunning facility), and Sunstone (family-owned and more French than Californian in nature).

Accommodations

Fess Parker
Hollywood and Vines

2860 Grand Avenue, Los Olivos, California

Fess Parker Wine Country Inn & Spa, Los Olivos, California

The late Fess Parker, better known to some for his portrayals of Daniel Boone and Davy Crocket in the 1950s and ‘60s, started this quaint country inn—complete with a restaurant and wine shop—in 1988. Having fallen in love with the peaceful and decorative landscape, the actor bought the 714-acre-ranch and converted it into luxurious four-star accommodations.

Having also purchased nearby vineyards, Parker asked his adult children to join him in this venture. The Parker family’s first vineyard was a five-acre experimental Riesling, planted in 1989.Today, the family now creates award-winning Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs, and Viogniers—from the more than 700 acres of vineyards they now own.

Guest rooms at the Fess Parker Wine Country Inn & Spa are spacious and each room is uniquely decorated. Fess’s wife, Marcy, was in charge of interior design, though her signature stamp in each room was that all guests would have the luxury of their own fireplace, robe, and slippers. In addition to the guest rooms, there is also a spa, offering a variety of facial and body treatments, as well as a pool and hot tub.

Diane Petras

“Learning about wine is like taking a journey. You learn about the region, the climate, why certain vines grow well there. Let me share Santa Ynez with you!”

Background

Diane Petras grew up in Ohio with parents who believed that children could develop their palates and experience fine dining at a young age. As an adult, Diane also developed an appreciation for fine wine. In 1996, she purchased a ranch in Santa Ynez and started dreaming of owning her own vineyard. Diane’s passion was contagious and her brother, Jim, bought the neighboring property. In 2010, under the label of Highland Oaks, 16 Crows Cuvee, the Petras family produced their first vintage, a Grenache Syrah blend, with winemaker Andrew Murray..

In the years leading up to the first vintage, Diane developed a love of farming. She prefers “putting the sticks in the ground” to the “chemistry” of the winemaking itself. She also has pet names and personalities for her grape varieties– Syrah is a stately English gentleman, Grenache is capricious and unpredictable, and Viognier is a dainty woman who needs extra pampering.

The close-knit community of Santa Ynez Valley has become like family to Diane. Many of her friends and neighbors come from glamorous Hollywood backgrounds, but they now share in the simple pleasures of small town life, such as helping weed one another’s vineyards and gathering for old-fashioned storytelling in the evenings.

Experience
A travel industry professional for decades, Diane has curated and organized destination conferences for groups ranging in size from 10 to more than 1,000. After moving to Los Angeles in the 1990s, Diane’s love for wine also turned into a second hobby/career as a vintner. She went back to school to educate herself on the wines of the world. This is her first curated tour featuring her beloved southern California home, the Santa Ynez Valley, and she is thrilled to share it with Traterra travelers.
